How Hydraulic Tiles are Made

Pelotas Hydraulic Tiles are all crafted by hand, following an  age-old traditional methodology. All orders are custom made by our craftsmen - so be prepared to wait for yours - we promise you that it will be worth it!

The colours are not painted on, but are cast in a mould using a mixture of tinted cement and powdered marble - instead of a paper-thin coat of paint, these tiles have about 2 mm thickness of colour, integral to the very hard materials of which it is composed. This makes the coloured surface extremely hardwearing and the colours highly durable - many tiles in Europe and Africa have lasted for hundreds of years.

The patterns we offer are mostly traditional, although we have some modern / contemporary designs. Clients may define alternative colours to those shown, within our patterns, for their projects. Because of the different requirements of various designs, we quote each job individually.

Proprietor of Fábrica de Mosaicos de Pelotas (Pelotas Mosaics Factory) and professional architect Sr Rudelger - note the tile colour stencils behind his head

First step - the individual tile mould or form is meticulously cleaned ready for making a new tile

The appropriate colour stencil is placed in the mould

The colours are two-thirds tinted cement and one third powdered marble, which gives great luminance and permanence to the colours

The artizan flows the appropriate colour into each compantment of the stencil - note the colour 'map' from which he is working

Once all the compartments have been loaded with the coloured material - a slurry of cement and marble powder - the stencil is delicately removed; to stop colours running, it is immediately dusted with dry cement powder; and then the mould is topped up with wet concrete and leveled

The wet tile in its mould are placed in a hydraulic ram and briefly compressed with 40,000 kilos of pressure

The now firm but uncured tile is lovingly finished by hand; after which it will dry for three days before being placed in a water bath for 30 days to cure to its final hardness

All of our tile rugs are custom handcrafted and therefore unique -
