How Hydraulic Tiles are Made

Pelotas Hydraulic Tiles are all crafted by hand, following an age-old traditional methodology. All orders are custom made by our craftsmen - so you must be prepared to wait for yours - we promise you that it will be worth it!

The colours are not painted on, but are cast in a mould using a mixture of tinted cement and powdered marble, So instead of a paper-thin coat of paint, or a print-on design, these tiles have some 3 - 6 mm thickness of colour material, integral to the very durable substances of which each is composed. This makes the coloured surface extremely hardwearing and the colours highly enduring - tiles in Europe and Africa have lasted for many hundreds, even thousands, of years.

The patterns we offer are mostly traditional, although we have some modern / contemporary designs. Clients may define alternative colours to those shown, within our patterns, for their very special projects. Because of the different requirements of various designs, we quote each job individually.

Proprietor of Fábrica de Mosaicos de Pelotas (Pelotas Mosaics Factory) and professional architect Sr Rudelger Leitzke - note the many stencils hanging behind his head

First - the individual tile mould or form is meticulously cleaned in preparation for making a new tile

The appropriate colour pattern stencil is placed in the mould

The colour media are prepared - dense slurries of two-thirds tinted cement with one third powdered marble, which makes for tile colours of great vitality, luminance and permanence

Appropriate colours are hand poured into each cell of the stencil - this is called the 'trotoir' step -  note the colour 'map' of each tile from which he is working

Once all the compartments have been loaded with the coloured slurry the stencil is delicately removed; to prevent colours from running they are immediately dusted with dry cement powder; the mould is then topped up with concrete and leveled

The wet tile in its mould are placed in a hydraulic ram and briefly compressed with 40,000 kilos of pressure

The tile - now firm but uncured - is lovingly finished by hand; after which it will be placed in a water bath for several days to cure to its final hardness

All of our tile rugs are custom handcrafted and therefore unique -
